Remembering Arthur Ashe, 30 Years Later
Thirty years ago today, Arthur Ashe passed away at the age of 49. Today we celebrate his legacy, including the many ways Ashe wrought goodness from difficulty throughout his incredible life. From transcending racial barriers both within his hometown of Richmond, Virginia and abroad in apartheid-era South Africa; from turning health issues into opportunities to educate; from working to ensure that future generations of young Black athletes would have an easier road than his, Ashe never backed down from a noble cause, tirelessly advocating for the young, sick, poor and oppressed until his final days. Together, we can continue to celebrate his towering legacy —today, during Black History Month, and every day.
